When choosing between aluminum and fiberglass pergolas, compare the actual roof, frame, supports and finish offered for your patio. The material name alone does not establish shade control, rain drainage, clear span or maintenance requirements. Two models made from different materials may also be intended for different kinds of outdoor space.

The Louvano Sera Motorized Louvered Pergola combines a powder-coated aluminum frame with remote-controlled double-wall aluminum louvers. If a fiberglass model is also on your shortlist, obtain its complete configuration before comparing the two.

Start with what you want overhead. Sera’s louvers rotate from 0 to 120 degrees, allowing the roof opening to be adjusted by remote. Closed louvers direct water through the beams and posts to outlets at the bases. An open-beam pergola offers a different roof arrangement; ask whether any shade or rain covering is included, optional or unsuitable for that particular frame.

Baldwin’s fiberglass pergola page provides a useful example of why the complete assembly matters. Its named systems combine fiberglass with stainless steel, copper and aluminum, and its gallery includes open-rafter structures and separate fabric shade options. Those examples do not mean every fiberglass pergola has the same roof or components.

Buyer check Sera specification Fiberglass model to request
Roof control Remote-controlled louvers rotating 0–120 degrees. Exact roof arrangement and any separately supplied shade system.
Rain route Closed louvers to beam channels, posts and base outlets. Roof covering and discharge details for the quoted configuration.
Frame and connections Powder-coated aluminum posts and beams; 304 stainless-steel fasteners. Full component and connection specification, including any other materials.
Size and support Nominal 3×3, 3×4 and 4×4 meter options; exact drawing required. Post locations, overhangs, support details and model-specific structural documents.
Care and repair Request the applicable finish, roof mechanism and drainage care instructions. Finish type, cleaning instructions and approved repair methods.

Check the usable patio space from each model’s drawing. Nominal size, post centers and overall roof dimensions are not interchangeable measurements. Mark post positions alongside doors, furniture and the route around the seating area. Ask for the structural information required at your site; do not rank allowable spans, wind resistance or snow performance by material alone.

Compare finishes and care as well. Baldwin identifies industrial coatings for its named fiberglass systems. Obtain the actual finish and repair instructions for the fiberglass model you are considering, alongside the applicable Sera care instructions. A coating description is not a promise that cleaning, inspection or repairs will never be needed.

Better Patio’s aluminum-versus-fiberglass article introduces the material comparison. For your order, use the two model specifications and site requirements to settle the decision. Request quotes for equivalent scope, including the chosen roof system, supports, installation and any electrical work, rather than comparing a bare frame with a complete motorized roof.

Sera material-comparison questions

Is Sera made only from aluminum?

The Louvano Sera Motorized Louvered Pergola uses powder-coated aluminum posts and beams, double-wall aluminum louvers and 304 stainless-steel fasteners. Compare the complete frame and connection specification with a fiberglass model, which may also contain other materials. A single material label does not describe every component in the assembled pergola.

Does aluminum alone make a pergola rain-ready?

The Louvano Sera Motorized Louvered Pergola routes water from closed louvers through beam channels and posts to base outlets. That behavior comes from the specified roof and drainage arrangement, not the aluminum label alone. Request the exact covering and water route for any fiberglass model before comparing rain performance.

Can I compare Sera size with a fiberglass clear span?

The Louvano Sera Motorized Louvered Pergola offers nominal 3 by 3, 3 by 4 and 4 by 4 meter footprints. Those dimensions do not establish an unsupported span. Compare exact post positions, roof dimensions and site-specific structural documents for both models before choosing a layout or making a span comparison.

Compare two specified configurations

Write down the roof behavior, usable layout, support requirements and care instructions for each shortlisted model. Send Louvano your patio measurements and intended use to review the suitable Sera configuration alongside those requirements.
