Can you paint an aluminum louvered pergola?

Published: September 21, 2026 | Author: Louvano | Category: Journal

Technically, yes. Paint can bond to powder-coated aluminum if the surface is cleaned, scuffed, and primed correctly. On a motorized louvered pergola, though, painting is more complicated than painting a fence or a railing.

The louvers rotate, rain drains through channels in the frame, and the motor is hidden inside the frame. Paint in the wrong place can affect all three. For most homeowners, the better plan is to keep the factory finish clean and contact Louvano before painting anything.

What finish does a Louvano pergola have?

Louvano pergolas have a powder-coated finish. Powder coating is applied as a dry powder at the factory and then cured with heat, which forms a hard, even layer over the aluminum.

That layer is the main protection for the frame and louvers. Paint applied at home sits on top of it, and it does not bond the same way.

Why do people want to paint a pergola?

The most common reasons are:

Each one has a better answer than repainting the whole structure, which we cover below.

What can go wrong when you paint a louvered roof?

A louvered pergola has parts that need to move and parts that need to drain.

Masking all of these areas carefully is a large job. Mistakes are hard to undo once paint is on a moving part.

What if I still want to paint it?

Contact [email protected] first. Describe what you want to paint and why. Painting moving parts, drainage channels, or areas near the motor can affect how the pergola works.

If you are planning a project like this before you order, email [email protected] and ask about finish options first. It is usually easier to choose the right finish at the start than to change it later.

General paint advice for powder-coated metal, such as cleaning, light scuffing, and using a primer made for coated metal, comes from paint makers. Follow their instructions, and never paint the louvers, the louver edges, or the beam channels without talking to us first.

How do I fix a chip or scratch?

Small chips usually happen at the bottom of the posts, from mowers, trimmers, or furniture. Contact [email protected] about touch-up options. Follow the care instructions supplied with your pergola.

Leaving a large chip open for a long time is not ideal, since bare aluminum can oxidize and leave white spots. Our article on whether an aluminum louvered pergola rusts explains what that looks like.

Do I need to paint it to protect it from rust?

No. Aluminum does not form red rust like steel, and the powder-coated finish already covers the metal. Louvano frames are also assembled with 304 stainless steel fasteners.

Follow the care instructions supplied with your pergola.

How should I care for the finish instead?

How do I choose the right color before ordering?

Because repainting is a big job, it pays to get the color right the first time. Email [email protected] before you order and ask which finish colors are available for your size, 10×13 or 10×20.

FAQ

Can I paint my Louvano pergola a different color?
Contact [email protected] before painting. Paint on moving louvers, drainage channels, or areas near the motor can affect how the pergola works.

Will house paint stick to powder coat?
Not well without proper preparation. Paint makers recommend cleaning, scuffing, and a primer made for coated metal. Even then, it does not bond the way the factory finish does.

Can I touch up a scratch myself?
Contact [email protected] with a photo and ask about touch-up options for your finish.

What colors are available?
