Can you put a hot tub under a louvered pergola?

Published: October 9, 2026 | Author: Louvano | Category: Journal

A hot tub under an adjustable roof sounds appealing. You get shade on sunny afternoons, cover from light rain, and an open view of the sky at night.

A hot tub is a big appliance with its own requirements, and those come first. If you’re planning a Louvano pergola over or near a hot tub, email [email protected] with your site and installation questions before you order. This article covers what to plan for the spa’s base, power, cover, steam, and rainwater.

What does the hot tub itself need?

Start with the hot tub maker’s instructions. They cover:

If the tub would sit on a deck or a raised surface, have a structural engineer and your local building department review it. Follow local codes for all of it.

How does the pergola fit around the tub?

On a Louvano pergola, the double-wall aluminum louvers rotate from 0 to 120 degrees by remote control. The motor is hidden in the frame. Louvano pergolas are built to order in two sizes, 10×13 and 10×20.

When you plan the layout, think about:

For foundation details, confirm against the product drawings and local codes. See louvered pergola foundation and our size guide.

Should the louvers be open while you use the tub?

Hot water gives off warm, moist air. Opening the louvers while the tub is in use lets that air rise out through the roof. Closing the roof over a steaming tub keeps more moisture underneath, and moisture can collect on cooler surfaces above.

Does the pergola replace the hot tub cover?

No. The hot tub cover keeps heat in and debris out, and the maker designed the tub to use it. Keep the cover on when the tub isn’t in use, even under a closed roof.

Where does the rainwater go?

When the louvers are closed, rain runs from the louvers into the beam channels, down through the posts, and out near the post bases. Plan the area around the tub so water moves away from the steps, the equipment, and walkways.

Ask [email protected] how to plan for the water that drains out near the post bases for your size and layout. For the full path, read how a louvered pergola drains water. Open sides mean wind-blown rain can reach the edges. See can a louvered pergola keep you dry in the rain.

How do you plan power for the tub and the pergola?

The hot tub and the pergola each need power. Use a licensed electrician, and follow local codes and the hot tub maker’s instructions.

See motorized pergola electrical requirements.

What about privacy?

Plants, planters, and freestanding privacy walls can add privacy without touching the pergola. If you are considering anything on the sides of the pergola, ask [email protected] first, before you order. With any privacy plan, leave a way for warm, moist air to escape.

What safety habits help around a hot tub?

Do you need a permit?

Hot tubs and pergolas may each need a permit, depending on where you live. Check with your local building department and your HOA. Our pergola permit guide covers the basics. We cannot promise any approval.

What about a pool instead?
