Can a louvered pergola keep you dry in the rain?

Published: September 11, 2026 | Author: Louvano | Category: Journal

Mostly, yes, when the louvers are fully closed. A closed louvered roof keeps most rain off the area underneath and sends it into a drainage path built into the frame. The sides are open, though, so wind can blow rain in at the edges, and partly open louvers let rain fall through.

This article explains what happens to rain on a closed roof, where you can still get wet, and how to set up your patio so you stay drier.

What happens to rain when the louvers are closed?

On a Louvano pergola, the closed double-wall aluminum louvers form the roof. Rain lands on them and runs into concealed drainage:

  1. From the louvers into the beam channels
  2. From the beam channels down through the posts
  3. Out near the post bases

That keeps most rain off the table and chairs under the roof. For a step-by-step look at the drainage path, read how a louvered pergola drains water.

What if the louvers are open or tilted?

The louvers rotate from 0 to 120 degrees. When they are open or tilted, there are gaps between them, and rain falls straight through to the patio. The drainage path only handles the rain when the roof is closed.

Louvano pergolas are operated by remote control, so plan to close the roof yourself when rain is on the way. If a shower catches you by surprise, close it right away and move anything that already got wet toward the middle.

Will wind-blown rain get in from the sides?

Yes. A closed roof handles rain coming down from above. It does not block rain that blows in sideways. On a windy, rainy day, expect the edges of the covered area to get wet, especially on the side facing the wind.

How far the rain reaches depends on wind speed, wind direction, and how open the surroundings are. Furniture in the center of the pergola stays drier than furniture at the edges.

Placement helps. A house wall, a fence, or a tall hedge on the side your storms usually come from can block some of the wind. Our freestanding vs wall-mounted guide covers what to think about when the pergola sits close to the house.

How dry will it be in different kinds of weather?

Weather What to expect under a closed roof
Light rain, little wind The area under the roof stays mostly dry.
Steady rain, light wind Most of the area stays dry. The edges may get some spray.
Rain with strong wind Rain blows in on the windward side. Move seating toward the middle.
Heavy downpour The roof sheds the rain into the drainage path. If leaves block the channels, water can overflow at the beams.

Louvano does not publish a drainage flow rate. Water runs from the closed louvers into the beam channels, down through the posts, and out near the post bases. Keep the louvers and beam channels clear of leaves.

Can water drip from the roof after the rain stops?

Sometimes. A little water can sit on top of closed louvers after a storm. When you tilt the louvers with the remote, that water runs off and some of it may drip onto the patio. Do this before you set out cushions or dishes.

On cool, humid nights, condensation can also form on aluminum louvers and drip in the morning, even when it has not rained.

What about the patio around the posts?

The rain that lands on the roof comes out near the post bases. On a patio, that water needs somewhere to go. Make sure it flows away from your seating area, the house, and doors, so you do not end up with puddles where people walk. Ask [email protected] how to plan for the water that drains out near the post bases for your size and layout.

How can you stay drier under a louvered pergola?

Is it loud under the roof when it rains?

You will hear rain on an aluminum roof, and heavy rain is louder. If a bedroom sits right above the patio, read how loud a motorized pergola is before you decide where to put it.

FAQ

Can I leave cushions out under a closed louvered pergola?
In light rain, cushions in the center usually stay dry. In wind-driven storms, the edges get wet, so bring cushions in or move them to the middle.

Will the roof close on its own when it starts raining?
Louvano pergolas are operated by remote control, so you close the roof with the remote. If you want the roof to close without you, ask [email protected] before you order.

Is a closed louvered pergola the same as a sunroom?
No. A louvered pergola has a roof you can open and close, and its sides are open. Rain and wind can still reach the edges.

Does a bigger pergola keep more of the patio dry?
The larger sizes cover more ground, so you have more room to keep seating away from the edges. The size guide helps you compare.
